Health effects – an overview

From our perception as sufferers, ‘Electrical Hypersensitivity' is an inadequate term to describe the physical breakdown and serious disability that can be associated with sensitisation to electrical fields and radiation.

Biological Effects

The various reactions of EHS sufferers are individual and can be extremely serious. However, these reactions all come under the ‘umbrella' of biological effects triggered by man-made electrical technology.

The syndrome can be explained most easily by understanding that the body operates with a delicate balance of electrical and chemical systems, whereby certain frequencies maintain healthy function of the brain, nervous system and organs.

In EHS, these electrical frequencies are over-ridden by artificial electrical energies, causing dysfunction. If individuals are chronically exposed, chronic sickness may occur.

People can become increasingly sensitised as they are more exposed – there is a cumulative effect.

Environmental Hazards

Over the last century, our bodies have been exposed to environmental hazards, some of which are only now being recognised. And in recent years, there have been advances beyond belief in everyday use of chemicals, electrical and electronic equipment and mobile technology using digital transmissions.

Our bodies have not yet acclimatised to these changes and the more sensitive people are becoming overwhelmed by our modern environment.

Initial symptoms may be subtle and not obviously related to their triggers. However, when unusual physical reactions can be directly related to electrical fields or radiation, these initial warnings of susceptibility should be taken seriously.

Though this is a new concept for health professionals to diagnose, there is information available, research and sufferers' networking.

Physical reactions

It appears that exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiation may provoke immediate reactions, short-term or long-term ill-health. For example there may be immediate disruption to the brain, leading to short-term malfunction of the nervous system with perhaps increasing / labile blood pressure. Then a period of several weeks of chronic fatigue may follow. Continued exposure may lead to chronic disability, perhaps with ‘ME', and to increasing sensitisation.

The various reactions of sufferers may be related to the frequencies to which they have become sensitised, to the degree of provocation and their personal sensitivity, and to their individual bodies.

Psychological issues?

There may be degrees of anxiety / depression which may colour the way in which the patient presents. Though for the patient this is an unexpected and unknown syndrome, which in itself can be a cause of worry, please note that electromagnetic fields and radiation may act as extreme stressors. The environment of the sufferer needs to be understood and addressed. When the provoking electrical fields are recognised and avoided, the sufferer may lose any psychological symptoms.

Medication

Prescribing medication to sensitive people (some of whom are already chemically sensitive) may lead to further ill-health and not resolve the underlying cause.

Our Members

Some of our members had health issues before the development of Electrical Hypersensitivity. For example, some were already allergic or intolerant to certain foods or chemicals.

However, others were working full-time until they became EHS. They became sensitised to their workplace ‘office' environment. Some have become chronically sick and unable to work.

It appears that some of the population may be especially vulnerable to developing EHS – or are we sufferers ‘the canaries' who are most sensitive and thus first to react?

We all now have great difficulty in coping with today's technologically ‘live' environment. Whereas we can protect ourselves to some degree from electromagnetic fields, we are especially vulnerable the digital transmissions from wireless technology.
